ABC's "Boston Med" features OHF Medical Advisor Wednesday, June 30, 2010
PROVIDENCE, RI ─ Dr. Emile Bacha, Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center and Medical Advisory Board Chair of Rhode Island non-profit organization Olivia’s Heart Fund will be featured on ABC television’s “Boston Med”. Airing Thursday at 10:00 p.m., the program chronicles the lives of medical professionals at the Children’s Hospital Boston, where Dr. Bacha was a Senior Associate in Cardiac Surgery. It was at that same hospital that he treated Olivia Ostiguy, after which Olivia’s Heart Fund is named.
As part of Olivia’s Heart Fund, Dr. Bacha helps identify potential grant applicants conducting research focused on decreasing the mortality rate and occurrence of babies born with congenital heart defects (CHD). Olivia’s Heart Fund main focus is to fund vital and promising research, increase public awareness and education about CHD and support those affected by it.
Dr. Bacha sits on numerous national committees including the Medical Advisory Board of the Children’s Heart Foundation and the Research Committee Board of The Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE). He is Co-Founder of ENTICHS meetings (Emerging New Techniques in Congenital Heart Surgery) and yearly co-Director, PICS-ENTICHS meeting and is a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Pediatric Council. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Pediatric Cardiology as Surgical Editor and is also the author of numerous original articles, abstracts and book chapters in the field of Pediatric Cardiology throughout the United States and Europe. His experience, knowledge, passion for his work and love for his patients will undoubtedly make compelling television.
“From our first encounter with Dr. Bacha, we knew our daughter would be getting the best care in the world. Even though Olivia’s surgery did not go as planned, Dr. Bacha’s innovative thinking got her out of the operating room alive, and gave her a chance for a heart transplant.” said Peter Ostiguy, father of Olivia who, along with his wife Julie, founded Olivia’s Heart Fund. “Even though Olivia did not survive, we knew that Dr. Bacha’s experience, passion, and stature in the world of congenital heart defects, would make him the best candidate to lead Olivia’s Heart Fund medical advisory board. We look forward to watching Thursday knowing that everyone who tunes in will be able to witness the world class level of care that we experienced.”
